Who lives in a pineapple under the sea and became the hottest star on Broadway? Why, it’s SpongeBob SquarePants, and the smash hit The SpongeBob Musical, coming this summer to Downtown Livermore as Bankhead Presents this shimmering, sparkling Tri-Valley Theatre Company production. Named Best Musical by the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle and nominated for twelve 2018 Tony Awards, the Broadway musical adaptation of the number one kids’ animated series on TV is equal parts charming, fun, and heartwarming, and is the perfect good time for the whole family to enjoy this summer. The SpongeBob Musical will play for seven (7) performances, August 1—16, 2026, at the beautiful Bankhead Theater located at 2400 First Street in Downtown Livermore. Plunge into this stunning all-singing, all-dancing, dynamic stage show! When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up. The power of optimism really can save the world!
The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg, and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny, and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt. The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau.
Opening night for The SpongeBob Musical is Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 7 pm, and the show runs through August 16, 2026. Performance times are Sundays at 1 pm, with Saturday 7 pm performances on August 1 and August 15, and additional Saturday 1 pm performances on August 8 and August 15. There will be an ASL-interpreted performance on Saturday, August 15 @ 1pm. There will be special Girl Scout Fun Patch events with post-show talkbacks after the 1pm shows on Saturday, August 8 and 15.
